What are Spravato® and Ketamine?
Learn the Differences Between Spravato® and Ketamine
One of the most common questions we receive at Compass of Hope is, "What are Spravato® and Ketamine?" Let's break this down to explain the difference between Spravato® and Ketamine and how the medications can provide fast-acting relief for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) and additional treatment-resistant conditions.
Both Spravato® and Ketamine are fast-acting treatments that may help people whose depression has not improved with traditional medications. While they come from the same medication family, they differ in FDA-approval, insurance coverage, and treatment options.
| Spravato® | Intranasal Ketamine |
|---|---|
| FDA-approved | Compounded medication |
| Contains esketamine | Contains Ketamine |
| Usually covered by insurance | Self-pay |
| Designed for treatment-resistant depression | May be considered for several treatment-resistant conditions |
What is Spravato®?
Spravato® is an FDA-approved nasal spray that contains esketamine, a form of ketamine specifically approved to treat adults with treatment-resistant depression.
Unlike many traditional antidepressants that may take several weeks before you notice improvement, Spravato® works differently by targeting the brain's glutamate system. This may help repair and strengthen communication between brain cells affected by depression, allowing some individuals to experience relief much sooner.
Because Spravato® is FDA approved, many insurance plans cover treatment once prior authorization requirements are met.
For safety, every treatment must be given in a certified medical office where patients are monitored before returning home. At Compass of Hope, our board-certified psychiatric providers are specially trained and REMS certified to administer Spravato® in a comfortable, private treatment setting.
What is Ketamine?
Ketamine therapy uses the same medication family but is offered differently than Spravato®. At Compass of Hope, we provide intranasal ketamine treatment as a self-pay option for individuals who may benefit from an alternative approach.
Ketamine has been studied for a variety of treatment-resistant mental health conditions and may be considered for individuals experiencing:
- Treatment-resistant depression
- Anxiety disorders
- PTSD or Complex PTSD
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Bipolar depression
- Postpartum depression
- Eating disorders
- Adjustment disorders
- Suicidal thoughts (when clinically appropriate)
Each appointment includes medication administration, monitoring throughout the visit, and compassionate support from our psychiatric team.
